Thank you for this thoughtful and well researched essay on dreams. It is my understanding that the yogis teach that dreamless sleep is what we aspire to. How do you think this fits with your studies?

That idea comes from a hierarchical understanding of the states of mind. The dream state is seen as a 'lesser' state in which we cycle through the residue of thoughts and mental processes, whereas dreamless sleep is one step closer to the ultimate fourth state of turiya, pure consciousness.

An awakened being who is totally open and present with clear mind throughout the day has no unconscious residue because nothing sticks to them, so they don't dream at night. Having said that, in tantric teachings, many awakened beings do dream and receive sacred transmissions and guidance during their dreams. So it's not always clear.

When I first started doing dreamwork, I found that I dreamt a lot more, as if there was a lot of stored-up material in my unconscious waiting to be worked through. After a few years of both dreamwork and meditation practice, the frequency of my dreams has reduced to the point that I sometimes miss having them. But it varies, depending a lot on my quality of sleep, and I go through phases too.

There are also some theories that if you're in a clear-mind, open state during the day, you need much less sleep in general. People who meditate for many hours a day do report sleeping less. In my own experience, meditation is like a waking dream state, but I love to sleep so I haven't found it's reduced the number of hours I spend in bed ;)

Thanks Jesi! I also find myself being online more than before, especially since I write on my laptop. But I balance it out with lots more time totally offline and outdoors if I can. And I also try to orient my online activities towards quality and depth 🥰
